PROTAN BLUEPROOF GREEN WATER ATTENUATION SYSTEM ON CONCRETE SUBSTRATE

Protan BlueProof is a new and SINTEF-approved (TG 20541) water attenuation system for new and existing roofs (also known as a blue roof). Protan BlueProof Green expands the function of the roof and helps prevent floods and water damage.

With this system, water is gradually drained and allowed into the storm drain network, avoiding overloading resulting in floods. The system not only solves current problems with storm floods, but also those of the future. Protan can calculate the predicted volumes of water for roofs in specific locations during storm events. Water loads can then be taken into account at an early stage during the building’s construction, ensuring the roof’s structure can retain the calculated water.
This is often cheaper than utilising other methods of water attenuation.

Protan BlueProof combines a trusted waterproofing system and a water attenuation system in one. Thus keeping a building’s contents secure whilst reducing the effects of flooding on the surrounding environment.

Water attenuation calculations are carried out by Protan and are based on the project's location, local authority requirements and the roof's design. Roof slopes can be reduced to 1:100 fall to provide the optimum water attenuation as well as a lower roof profile.

Protan BlueProof Green system takes the concept a step further by allowing the roof to be utilised further, whether this is a extensive green roof or a roof terrace for recreational use. A void beneath the protection layer allows for a water magazine to build up in the event of a storm.

Quality assurance of installation
A Protan BlueProof Roofing System shall always be calculated and planned in detail by Protan AS. The roofing system must be installed by roofing contractors specially approved by Protan AS. Their roofers must have passed "Roofing school" (a certificate containing the relevant basic education in Protan's roofing handbook) and attended Protan BlueProof roofing training.

All roofs must be undertaken visual inspection done by a person especially appointed by Protan. During the inspection focus shall lie on good melt out along all welding joints on the roof area as well as around details and endings.

After completing the roof installation, a water flood / pressure test of the roof area has to be carried out, alternatively, verification using electronic leak testing.

Maintenance
For Protan BlueProof annual inspection is required to be in front of possible damages. All Protan BlueProof roofs require a maintenance agreement with the building owner. This will ensure qualified inspection and maintenance of the roof and its components up to two times a year during the roofs lifetime.

CONSTRUCTION STRUCTURE:

  • TERRACE / EXTENSIVE GREEN / SEDUM ROOF LAYERS
  • PROTAN BLUECELL WATER DRAINAGE LAYER
  • PROTECTION MEMBRANE
  • PROTAN BP GREEN
  • PROTAN APPROVED FASTENERS (IF REQUIRED)
  • CONDUCTIVE FELT LAYER
  • INSULATION
  • VAPOUR CONTROL LAYER
  • CONCRETE SUBSTRATE

PROTAN BP MEMBRANE:

  • Protan BP Green is ca. 1.8 mm thick roofing membrane made of pliable PVC with a core of extra strong polyester reinforcement, which is used in Protan BlueProof Green Roofing System.
  • Protan BP Green can be used as roofing on different kinds of substrate, but needs a separate glass migration barrier of the quality 120 g/m2 on polystyrene substrates.
  • Protan BP Green has additional stabilizers to make the membrane resistant to high and low temperatures, ultra violet radiation and atmospheric contamination and to improve safety in case of fire.
  • Welding of joints is carried out by using hot air. The roofing membranes have an embossed surface that provides an anti-slip texture.

 SYSTEM INSTALLATION METHOD:

  • Protan Standard Overlap System - The membrane is fastened to the substrate along the longitudinal sheet edges and overlapped by the adjoining roll. The two rolls are welded together using hot air.
  • Protan Prefabricated Sheets system is the best and fastest solution in wind-exposed areas, so it is ideal when the roof has to be covered quickly. The membrane is provided in 2 or 4 metre widths with high strength strips welded longitudinally on the underside for mechanical fastening.
  • The Protan Secret Fix System uses a membrane in 2-metre widths with extra strong strips welded transversely to the underside for mechanical fastening.

Please contact Protan for further advice.

FASTENERS:

  • Protan approved - must be calculated according to EN 1991-1-4 alongside national annexes and local regulations.

INSULATION:

Various types of insulation can be used in combination with Protan membranes and can be flat insulation or sloped insulation. The material type and design will depend on the building design, fire classification and local regulation requirements.

  • Mineral wool (MW) – can be glass or stone type
  • Polyisocyanurate (PIR) - foil faced
  • Combination EPS-MW

VAPOUR CONTROL LAYER:

  • Polyethylene
  • Bitumen

CONCRETE SUBSTRATE:

  • Structural concrete as either precast elements or reinforced cast in-situ.
